My love affair with romance novels began with some hand-me-down Barbara Cartland books that my aunt gave me at a young age. Those easily read, whimsical bouts of G-rated fantasy was my initiation into the world of romance novels.
While I often heard my uncle or father jokingly complain about their wife’s nose being buried in a book, I now understand the lure of starting and finishing a riveting romance novel. Getting caught up in a book can really consume a person’s attention.
So, why would you want to encourage your lady to read more romance novels when she can barely acknowledge her surroundings while reading one?
Reason 1 –To begin with, stop worrying about us fantasizing over the perfect guy in the novel because romance heroes are riddled with flaws. They are often condescending, self-absorbed, and ignorant in some way, shape, or form. Typically, it is the heroine we identify with. She can teach us so many things about who we are and how we deal with life events.
For instance, I once slapped a classmate in fourth grade because I thought he was being “fresh” with me. Looking back, I can’t even remember what harmless little thing I thought he said, but thanks to all my reading, I knew exactly how a spirited lady would react!
Reason 2 – Another reason to encourage her wanton reading is because when your lady finally closes her book she feels happy. Her dear friends (aka characters in the book) have overcome obstacles, found true love, and are living happily ever after. This happiness and contentment will spill right over to you. Her good mood will be reflected in her actions and attitude with random kisses and suggestive winks. She’s on a high from the knowledge she’s gleaned on how to tackle problems and implement solutions, and you are the lucky recipient, my friend.
Reason 3 – Lastly, you can learn creative writing strategies from romance novels. Poetic language abounds in breathy soft whispers, heaving bosoms, and fluttering lashes. Where else can you encounter such literary euphemisms such as this one from a Sandra Brown book I read long ago, “His hammer was hard enough to drive nails through bricks!”I burst out laughing when I read it and shared it with my newlywed husband. Ask your partner to share the more comical euphemisms with you.
Reason 4 – The whimsical journey your love takes when reading a romance novel can really help spark imagination and bring a sweet escape to your relationship, especially if you are into role-playing. Did she just finish a western? Bring out the cowboy hat and boots. If she’s into Civil War romance then start practicing your southern drawl. As a woman and avid reader, I can assure you encouraging your woman to read romance novels will enhance your relationship in fun and creative ways.
Reason 5 – Romance novels can help women feel happy, attractive, and knowledgeable. They provide a fun, harmless, temporary escape from reality. Encourage your lady love to delve into an entertaining novel and watch how it rejuvenates her. She’ll pick up some pointers to help improve her own relationshipwith you while doing something she enjoys.
